Introduction to the area

Arnside is a Victorian seaside resort in a stunning location.  It is situated on the boundary of the Lake District National Park and is in the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  The mountains of the Lake District form a dramatic backdrop to the contrasting local countryside of woodland, coast and limestone landscape.  Within easy reach of the village are the southern parts of the Lake District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales, Lancaster and Morecambe.

The village is well served with most amenities.  There is a recreation ground with a children’s play area about 600 yards away.   Lancaster, 15 miles away, is a historic city.  It has a university and an active arts community, supporting in particular the Dukes Playhouse and a live music scene.   Morecambe offers bowling, megazone and a multi-screen cinema.  Kendal, 12 miles away, is the nearest town.  Apart from its value as a shopping centre with usual services, there is also a leisure centre with swimming pool, the Brewery Arts Centre and a cinema.

The major attraction of the area is its natural history.  Leighton Moss, a major RSPB reserve (famed for its booming bitterns), is only 3 miles distance and offers a wide insight into the local habitats with an education centre and resources.  Various local trails reveal other aspects of this unique area: its geology, geography and biology.  Fascinating local and national history can be traced via historical monuments and museums, as well as through the many stately and country houses that are open to the public.
