A real find for cheap family breaks if you love Lake District holidays but could do without the summer crowds. YHA Arnside is a good touring base for activity breaks in the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales and, if you’re into walking holidays there are plenty of walks nearby. Those looking for birdwatching holidays will enjoy the RSPB reserve and butterfly lovers shouldn’t miss Arnside Knott.
We aim to cater for the needs of all visitors in this 55-bed hostel; a 3-storey building on the shores of Morecambe Bay with stunning views of the Lakeland Fells. We have two bedrooms on the ground floor. One of these is accessible with an en-suite accessible bathroom.

The road from the bus stop is steeply inclined and evenly surfaced with tarmac. There is a pavement running on one side of the road (opposite to the hostel) with a dropped kerb close to the hostel drive. Street lighting along this route is poor.

Car Parking and Arrival
We have free onsite parking just metres from the main entrance. The car park is level and evenly surfaced with tarmac. There are no marked bays, but we are happy to reserve a space close to the main entrance if required. The car park is well lit with sodium vapour lighting.
From the tarmac there is a level paved path leading to the main entrance. If you let us know what time you are coming we will do our best to provide assistance moving to and from cars.
Main Entrance and Reception
To enter the hostel there is a single leaf door which opens inwards into the reception lobby. The floor here is level and the area is well-lit. The flooring is varnished wood. The reception desk does not include a low level section, but we can offer a clipboard or access to a table if this is easier. A portable induction loop is available on request from the reception desk.
A payphone is available in this area, as is an emergency phone to connect to a member of staff during the night.
Do you have vibrating pillow alarms? YES, we have one.
Halls, Corridors and Stairs
There is good colour contrast to floor, walls and doorways throughout the building. All public areas, halls, stairs and landings are well lit using a combination of ceiling and wall lights.
The corridor flooring on the ground floor is varnished wood. On the upper floors it is carpet. In the basement the flooring is flagstones.
There is no lift, so access to the upper floors is by stairs only. The staircases are carpeted and have a bannister fitted on both sides. There are 18 steps to the first floor.
There are three WCs close to reception, all unisex and of which has accessible WC. The accessible WC is fitted with grab rails, low level sink and emergency cord. All have non-slip flooring and are well-lit.

Our lounge is located on the ground floor and has level access via a single leaf door. The floor is level throughout and surfaced with carpet. There is even lighting provided by ceiling lights, wall lights and lamps.
The room is furnished with coffee tables, sofas and chairs with armrests. All furniture can be moved; please just ask at reception if you require assistance.
The dining room is located on the ground floor and has level access via a single leaf door. The floor is level and the room is well-lit. The floor is surfaced partly with carpet and partly with vinyl, but there is no difference in level at the join.
There are dining tables, benches and straight backed chairs without armrests. All furniture can be moved; please just ask at reception if you require assistance.
Table service is available; please ask at reception and we will be happy to help. We are also happy to cater for dietary requirements or any particular likes or dislikes to the best of our ability. Please advise us of these before your arrival.
The self-catering kitchen is located on the ground floor and has level access via a single leaf door. The floor is level and surfaced with vinyl flooring. The room is well-lit. Clear, visible signs (in large font) are displayed for advice on equipment use. The sinks are fitted with lever taps.
Crockery and some kitchen equipment are kept in high shelving units. We would be happy to move these to lower storage if required.
The drying room is located in the basement. There is a steep flight of 9 stone steps down. From the stairs there is a level threshold into the room. The floor is level throughout and surfaced with stone.
Is there a handrail on the staircase? YES
We have two dedicated classrooms on the ground floor. There is level access to one from the entrance hall. The second has level access via the first, as they are adjoined. However, if the first is in use then access is via a level, paved external path (20 metres approximately) followed by a small step at the threshold.
The floor in the rooms is level and surfaced with tiles in the first room and polished concrete in the second. The lighting is even and bright. The two rooms are most often used as one unit. We can provide tables and chairs in a variety of seating arrangements.
Bedrooms and Bathrooms
All of our rooms contain a washbasin. Unless otherwise stated, all bedrooms have bunk beds and are not en-suite. All bedrooms are carpeted and well-lit with ceiling and individual bunk lights (those that do not have bunk light a light can be obtained from reception. All bedding is provided.
All of the bathrooms have fluorescent lighting and non-slip flooring. The standard showers have a step up to enter and a folding chair. The WCs and showers are also all fitted with grabrails.
One 6-bedded accessible room (double bed, two bunk beds) with accessible en-suite bathroom. The bathroom is fitted with grab rails, low level washbasin, and lever taps.

One 2-bedded room with en-suite shower room
One twin, one twin with en-suite, two 4 bed, one 4 bed with shower en-suite, one 6 bed with shower en-suite, one 8 bed. There is also two toilets and one shower on the main first floor landing with a further two toilets and a shower along the ‘Nurses’ corridor.
One twin, one single, one double, one 4 bed, one 5 bed family room (bunk, single double), one 7 bed (2 bunks 3 singles), on 8 bed. There is a further three toilets and two showers.
Grounds and Garden
We have approximately a quarter of an acre of gardens to the side and back of the hostel. It is accessed by a paved sloping path and is a level area of lawn. The rear gardens are in 3 terraces, one paved, one mostly lawn and one rough. All are accessed by stone steps with no handrails.
Two 3-seat benches (with armrests) are available in the garden.
The cycle shed is to the side of the house. To reach it there is access from the car park.
The hostel has two cats and a small dog that live onsite, dogs are welcome by prior arrangement.
We do not permit smoking (including E-cigarettes) anywhere in the hostel.
A member of staff is always available on site, including at night.
Braille signs are fitted on room doors and corridor doors.
Emergency lighting and fire alarms fitted. We ensure that all guests are evacuated in the event of fire or any emergency requiring evacuation. Arrangements for guests needing assistance to evacuate in case of fire should be discussed beforehand.
Evacuation procedures are displayed in each bedroom.
Mobile phone reception within the hostel and the immediate vicinity is poor.
Wi-Fi is available in most areas of the hostel.
